I was too afraid to exercise in pregnancy, but I probably should have tried this new combination called "gyrotonics". 
 This form of exercise is supposed to help circulation and assist with a number of the discomforts of pregnancy.  It can also help after delivery to get back into shape.

TV presenter and femail.co.uk beauty expert Julia Carling has followed an unusual form of exercise called 'gyrotonics' which has left her feeling slimmed down and toned.

What is it? An exercise system similar to Pilates developed by a Hungarian called Julio Horvath. Unlike Pilates, it is based on the principles of yoga, Tai Chi and dance. The technique benefits pregnant woman before and after labour because it encourages flexibility, abdominal strength and deep breathing to aid relaxation during labour.

What's involved?
Gyrotonics is designed to lengthen and strengthen the abdominal muscles which are used to support the uterus. This is done through breathing and simple exercises. The main difference between the two systems is that gyrotonics emphasises quality of movement - making it slightly more cardiovascular than Pilates.

This helps boosts blood circulation - important to avoid varicose veins and leg cramps associated with pregnancy. It also supports the pelvis which stops the spine from becoming curved due to the load of the baby - and encourages flexibility for childbirth.

Some gyrotonic exercises are performed using a special piece of equipment called a 'tower' - a bench-like table with weights connected to a pulley system. Others are performed standing, sitting or kneeling on all fours. The exercises help to strengthen the spine to support the weight of the baby, prevent the pelvis from tilting back too far, thus straining the lower back and prevents the abdominal muscles from separating too much.
